The overtake and the law
13 Apr 2017
Remarkably the law says little about overtaking. The acceleration and manoeuvrability of a motorcycle has long been recognised by the Civil Law and drivers, contrary to urban myth, actually have to look before they change their position in the road potentially moving into the path of an overtaking motorcyclist.

Viva España, by bike
06 Apr 2017
Andrew Prendergast decided to swap the cold and grime of a British winter for the less cold and welcoming sun of Spain. And he took his dad. Here’s one man’s story of a stolen few days of summer-y fun on two wheels.

Trouble with a heedless horseman
30 Mar 2017
I was riding a local green lane that is a byway open to all traffic (there are signs at each end confirming it) as two horses came down it towards me. I stopped and killed the engine but, rather than just riding by, the lead rider decided to have a go at me with the […]

Pain comes at a price

Just how much should you be entitled to following a life-changing accident?

Riding in groups: the pros and cons
17 Mar 2017
There are some old pre-war cases which place a high duty on leading riders and this has led to some strange advice and some odd prosecutions for motorcyclists riding in a group.

Is it my fault as I had headphones on?
09 Mar 2017
I live on the outskirts of Manchester. As I had a meeting in the city centre I decided to take my moped. Approximately 30 minutes later I was flat on my back in an ambulance on the way to A&E.

When can I ride a motorbike on the pavement?
02 Mar 2017
I recently saw a video on social media of a scooterist riding along a pavement, and I was told that the rider wasn’t prosecuted. Is It ever actually legal to ride a motorcycle on the pavement? There must be some grey areas.

Caravan of Love
23 Feb 2017
When someone pulls out in front of you, after they’ve been told not to, who can you point the finger at for some legal redress?

Is 50/50 fair for filtering failure?
16 Feb 2017
I was hit by a car that made a U-turn as I was attempting to pass it in a slow-moving queue of traffic. So far, so easy – but I’m being told that I am equally to blame for this crash.

Scrubber gets Police probe
09 Feb 2017
I was pulled up by the Police for scrubbing in tyres. I was riding my bike on a fast figure of eight roundabout on a Sunday at about 7am in a deserted industrial estate when two road traffic officers turned up.

Car caused crash, but ex wants cash
02 Feb 2017
I was riding along a four-lane stretch of motorway, two-up in the second lane, when I was smacked in the fairing by a chunk of tyre. To my right I could see a Ford Focus grinding along the central reservation. The Focus then span and slewed across lanes four, three and two, coming to rest […]

Meeting horses on the trials
26 Jan 2017
We’ve all come across horses at some point or another, whether on the tarmac or on the lanes. Common sense and mutual courtesy are all you need to deal with them, but the law does have something to say.

Sail Away
19 Jan 2017
I work for a pizza delivery company. ‘Management’ decided it would be a good idea to get a trailer made for one of the scooters; the trailer then had big sign stuck on it. I personally thought it was a cheesy idea (apologises for the bad joke).

A Surprise in Storage
05 Jan 2017
A car pulled out on me on a damp road. I braked, my bike went down and sustained some pretty minor plastics, lever and silencer damage.

Dipstick speeder
29 Dec 2016
Me and my mate both got stopped by the police for speeding at 40mph in a 30mph. As soon as I got off I apologised to the female officer and basically put my hands up.

Hire Bike Charges
22 Dec 2016
I have a Hornet 600 worth about a grand. I got spanked off by some young kid in a Corsa. While I have fully comprehensive cover, my insurer told me not to claim off my insurance and get the money from the kid’s instead.

Testing Times
15 Dec 2016
My nephew asked me to check out the wheel bearings he had replaced on his little 125. Because I don’t have a motorcycle at present I had no bike Insurance, but in order to give it a ‘road test’ I rode it in a very large shopping centre car park at about 9pm on a […]

Have jeans left me out of pocket?
08 Dec 2016
I fell off my bike at about 50mph when a car in the opposite lane turned right in front of my bike. We did not make contact, but I grabbed a handful of non-ABS brake, my front end washed out and I slid down the road.
