If you are involved in a road traffic accident you are obliged to stop if you have either injured another person or animal or caused damage to another vehicle or roadside property.
You need to provide your details to anyone requesting these and in the absence of anyone to give your details to you must report the matter to the police as soon as possible and within 24 hours of the accident. The rules apply if you caused the accident, even if you did not physically hit anything.
Failure to stop/report an accident usually attracts between five and ten penalty points, a fine of up to £5,000.00, could lead to a prison sentence and may result in your vehicle being confiscated. The courts do regard this seriously.
